Dartmouth all-time moment No. 7: Sea Lonergan nabs third straight first-team All-Ivy selection

We’re counting down the top 10 moments in each Ivy school’s history as part of our Ivy League at 60 retrospective. Dartmouth is next because, well, see previous post.

After a 1996-97 season in which senior Sea Lonergan led Dartmouth to a second-place Ivy finish, Lonergan was obviously deserving of a third straight first-team All-Ivy selection, and he was awarded just that.

The stats said it all: 17 points per game on 48.6 percent shooting, 2.2 steals per contest (second in the conference) and a league-leading 108 free throws, plus 4.7 win shares, good for fourth in the league.

Most importantly, Lonergan’s senior season was the appropriate swan song for the forward, who led the school in all-time steals and finished second in points, second in minutes per game and sixth in assists. Lonergan was a guy who could pick pockets, pass with the best of them and score like a machine. The Big Green went 57-47 overall and 35-21 in Ivy play during Lonergan’s career, a relatively rare winning clip for a program that benefited greatly from Lonergan and teammates like Kenny Mitchell and Brian Gilpin.
