On the Vine – Feb. 18, 2016

The panel breaks down how Princeton-Columbia went wrong for the Lions after host Peter Andrews’ show-opening monologue about the Sisyphean task of being a Columbia fan, Ivy title and NIT prospects for Princeton and Yale, and much more. Peter Andrews and Mike Tony are joined by IHO writer George Clark and Big Apple Buckets editor-in-chief John Templon for this episode.

  1. The story Peter Andrews told about Alexander Hamilton characterized as possibly apocryphal is in fact true.

Hamilton’s first choice in colleges was Princeton, but he was not admitted. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington ordered Hamilton to lead a battery of artillery against the British garrison which occupied Nassau Hall. Hamilton’s battery was successful in landing a number of shells on target, so Hamilton is without question the only college reject in history who was able to later fire explosives (in a good cause, to boot) on the school which had spurned him.

While I am very sympathetic to Peter’s suffering as a Columbia fan, he might be too quick in characterizing Princeton as having a deal with the devil. What about Harvard? The Crimson seem to have agreed with the underworld to lead the entire league toward lower academic standards in return for getting breaks like the Yale collapse at Dartmouth last season. Perhaps BOTH Princeton and Harvard have separate deals with the devil. I guess we should all root for Yale to win the league because it represents the forces of good. Go Bulldogs!
