Princeton rolls over Cal Poly, 81-52

The Tigers celebrated New Year’s Eve by crushing the Mustangs of Cal Poly, 81-52, in a matinee at Jadwin. Princeton dominated from the outset, catching the visitors at the end of a grueling road trip.

The Tigers shot 56 percent from the floor, including a robust 13-for-23 from beyond the arc. Steven Cook, clearly embracing his role as the go-to scorer for the Tigers, canned six treys on his way to a game-high 24 points. Devin Cannady joined him in double figures with 10, including his 500th point just halfway through his second season in the orange and black.

Spencer Weisz once again came tantalizingly close to a triple-double, with nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and seven assists in just 29 minutes.

Henderson’s committee system for the five position was once again greatly beneficial. Four different players were deployed to the paint and they produced  18 points and 12 rebounds. Alec Brennan continues to mature. He played 16 minutes, long enough to launch seven shots, surely a sign of increasing confidence. He contributed six points, an assist and two blocked shots.

Princeton’s modest three-game winning streak enabled the Tigers to finish the out-of-conference slate with a winning record at 7-6. Now we get down to business. The Penn women’s and men’s teams visit Jadwin Gym Saturday to start the Ivy season with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

Happy 2017 to all!
