Introducing Ivy Hoops Online’s new podcast Inside Ivy Hoops, hosted by Brett Franklin and Jill Glessner, who also serve as the voices of Dartmouth basketball. Each week during conference play through the end of the 2017-18 season, Inside Ivy Hoops will feature guests from around the Ivy hoops landscape, broadcasting just how special and fascinating the people and storylines are that comprise Ivy League basketball on both the women’s and men’s sides.
Joining Jill and Brett for episode one on Thursday were Princeton men’s assistant coach Brett MacConnell, Penn men’s assistant coach Ira Bowman, Harvard women’s head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith and Dartmouth women’s head coach Belle Koclanes.

Penn assistant coach Ira Bowman did play with AI and the Sixers, but older Ivy fans may remember his two years playing at Penn in the mid-90s.
Ira “The Showman” Bowman started his college career at Providence in ’91-’92 and transferred to Penn after the ’92-’93 season. In the ’94-’95 season, he averaged 10.8 points in 20 minutes per game. That team lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in OT to an Alabama team led by Antonio McDyess. Bowman had 15 points and 8 rebounds playing 32 minutes that day.
In ’95-’96, Ira averaged 16.4 points (2nd in league), 5.3 assists (1st), 5.0 rebounds (10th) and 2.1 steals (1st) per game. He was named Ivy League Player of the Year his senior season. The team was 17-10 overall and went 12-2 in the conference. The first Ivy loss (at Dartmouth in 2/96) ended the record 48 conference win streak that had begun at Cornell in 3/92. The team was co-champs with Princeton. Even though the Quakers had beaten Princeton twice that season, they lost the one-game playoff in OT.
One of Bowman’s teammates in ’94-’95 was former Penn coach Jerome Allen. Nat Graham, a present assistant coach at Penn, was on the team for both of Bowman’s seasons. Present Quakers head coach Steve Donahue was an assistant under Fran Dunphy during those years.
Also – Following the OT win, Princeton coach Pete Carril announced his retirement following the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers then went on to upset UCLA, the defending national champs, before losing to Mississippi State in the 2nd round. On that team were future Princeton coaches Sydney Johnson (junior), and Mitch Henderson (sophomore), as well as former Tigers assistant coach and present Cornell coach Brian Earl (first-year).
