Yale announced Monday that women’s basketball senior Tamara Simpson has stolen the school’s beloved mascot, Handsome Dan.
Simpson stole Handsome Dan XVIII from caretaker Kevin Discepolo over the weekend, in a move that her coach Allison Guth said was an attempt to train the dog, given Simpson’s interest in personal training.
“She just wanted to make sure Handsome Dan didn’t have cardiovascular issues like some of his predecessors did,” Guth said. “While I don’t condone it, it was a commendable motivation.”
Simpson finished third in the nation in steals and put her pickpocketing prowess to good use in pilfering Handsome Dan.
“She apparently had Dan at the gym and had taken over his Instagram account,” Guth said. “Very clever.”
The university decided to let Simpson have the dog as a token of its appreciation for her success as a student-athlete.
Handsome Dan XIX will be chosen in the next several weeks.
“Now our comeback from 11 down with under two to play to beat South Alabama, that was a steal worth investigating,” Guth said.
