Ivy League player carousel

The biggest story of the off-season was Miye Oni being selected in June’s NBA Draft.  The Yale junior and reigning Ivy Player of the Year decided to leave school early and leave his name in the draft.  Despite falling to the late second round, a perilous spot to making an NBA roster, Oni impressed in the Summer League and earned a guaranteed contract with the Utah Jazz.  He is playing just as well in the pre-season and looks to be a real steal for the Jazz.

Cornell’s Matt Morgan and Princetonians Myles Stephens and Devin Cannady played in the NBA Summer League as free agents, but none earned a long-term deal.  Cannady was signed by the Brooklyn Nets Tuesday and is expected to be assigned to the team’s G-League squad in Long Island.  Harvard’s Corey Johnson has a spot for this coming season, signing a deal in Spain with Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea.

If Morgan and Stephens do not get sign with an NBA or G-League team over the next several days, they will, most likely, have to look overseas to continue their basketball careers.

Several Ivy grads had one more season of eligibility and will continue playing in 2019-2020.  In addition to the Big Red’s Stone Gettings, who skipped the 2018-2019 season, graduated from Cornell in December and moved to the University of Arizona, Columbia’s Quinton Adlesh is off to USC, Dartmouth’s Guilien Smith is at Northeastern, Havard’s Tommy McCarthy went to Rice, Penn’s Tyler Hamilton is at William & Mary and fellow Quaker Collin McManus is at Fairleigh Dickinson.

The biggest name in the transfer process was Brown’s Desmond Cambridge.  The 2018 Ivy League Rookie of the Year had initially narrowed his list to Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Stanford.  After dropping Stanford and tweeting that he would make his decision on April 29, no announcement was made.  Cambridge would eventually reopen his recruitment and end up at the University of Nevada.  Former Dartmouth forward Adrease Jackson had a more routine transfer process and moved to the University of Northern Arizona.

On the women’s side, three-time first team All-Ivy guard Katie Benzan surprised the conference when she decided to take off her senior season.  While Benzan has not made any announcements about her basketball future, it will most likely continue next year as a graduate transfer.  Two Dartmouth grads, Cy Lippold and Isalys Quinones will continue their basketball careers.  Quinones will continue with the Puerto Rico national team, which earned a bronze medal in this summer’s Pan Am Games, and Lippold will be a graduate assistant at Mercer, which will visit Yale on Jan. 2 and Columbia on Jan. 4.

Of the newcomers, Harvard leads the way with ESPN 4-star recruit Chris Ledlum and 3-star Ciaran Brayboy.  Yale and Penn each bring in an ESPN 3-star recruit with EJ Jarvis joining the Bulldogs and Max Lorca-Lloyd signing up with the Quakers.  Silke Milliman arrives at Penn as a 4-star recruit and #70 spot on the ESPN HoopGurlz recruiting site, while Princeton counters with Eleanor Mitchell, a 4-star recruit at #93.

Brown brings in junior Noah Meren, who played at Division III Skidmore for former Cornell assistant coach Joe Burke (2000-2004), and the Big Red welcome transfer Sarju Patel, who played at VMI under Cornell head coach Brian Earl’s brother Dan.  In addition, two Columbia transfers from last year, Joseph Smoyer and Kallin Spiller, and one from Dartmouth, Trevon Ary-Turner, will be eligible to play this season.

  1. As usual, Dr. B, well researched and very informative. Abby Meyers, a 6′ sophomore, is “rearriving” for the Tiger women, after leaving school last year. She showed tremendous potential in her first year. Her presence makes the Tigers even stronger.
