Ivy Friday roundup

Yale 90, Brown 66

Last week, Yale built a 21-4 lead hosting Brown before the Bears clawed their way back in to pester the Bulldogs the rest of the game. Friday night brought just the opposite.

Brown forced a 19-19 tie at the 6:27 mark of the first half, but Yale ended the first stanza on a 21-8 run to forge a 40-27 halftime lead that only ballooned further once the contest resumed, eventually hitting a 30-point peak at 74-44 just before the under-8:00 media timeout. Senior forward Brandon Sherrod notched 24 points on 9-for-9 shooting, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Normally, missing 10 of its first 21 free throws and having reigning Ivy Player of the Year Justin Sears pick up two early fouls would hurt Yale, but because of Sherrod, junior forward Sam Downey (18 points on 8-for-11 shooting) and Brown’s 16 turnovers, the Bulldogs never had to worry. Brown was led by senior center Cedric Kuakumensah’s 13 points and eight boards. Yale has vanquished lesser competition all season, and Friday night was no exception. The blizzard currently rocking the eastern seaboard just made it happen sooner that’s all.

If Yale is able to get this kind of production from its bench and frontcourt in general when Sears is out of commission, the rest of the Ivy League stands to struggle that much more against the Elis.

  1. That’s a lot of hashtags in Justin Sears’ tweet. Here’s another one which he did not have room for: #NoteToSelf:Don’tTouchLengthOfCourtPassOnItsWayOutOfBoundsWhichWouldWinYaleFirstOutrightIvyLeagueChampionshipInHalfACentury
