Yale men clamp down on Columbia, 84-59

It was a dominant performance on both ends of the floor.

Yale dismantled Columbia at Levien Gym, 84-59, to move to 8-1 in Ivy league play and remain alone atop the conference.

Yale used a 16-8 run over the final 6:30 of the first half to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

Columbia (4-18, 1-9 Ivy) scored the first seven points of the second half, but then it was all Yale (14-9, 8-1).

Yale shot a season-high 63% from the field and held Columbia to only 42%.

The Bulldogs were led by first-year player Matt Knowling with 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field. Knowling has been one of the most efficient Ivy Leaguers since conference play started and is certainly well within the conversation for Ivy Rookie of the Year.

Always steady Azar Swain had 17 points and reserve John Poulakidas had a strong first half and a career-high 10 points.

Fifteen Elis played and 10 scored.

“We have a lot of options,” Yale coach James Jones said.

Columbia was once again without injured leading scorer Ike Nweke.

Next weekend could go a long way to determining the Ivy regular-season winner and Ivy tourney seeding. Penn invades John J. Lee Amphitheater on Friday night and Princeton makes a visit on Saturday. It will mark the first Ivy games in which the general public can watch the Bulldogs at home.
