Princeton women’s basketball routs Rutgers, 66-49

Princeton women’s basketball beat up Rutgers Sunday at Jersey Mike’s Arena, 66-49, before a crowd of 2,281.

The Tigers were tasked with having to take Rutgers senior guard Destiny Adams out of the game. Adams was averaging 21.7 points and 12 rebounds per game, the latter clip good for third in the country.

Princeton coach Carla Berube called Adams “a monster inside” to the Big Ten Plus announcers before the game.

The Tigers tamed the monster.

Adams managed only four points, stymied by a swarming and intense Princeton defense, which will have to get more accustomed to playing without star junior guard Madison St. Rose, who is out for the season with a knee injury suffered last week against Quinnipiac.

Rutgers opened the game on a trey by freshman guard Kiyomi McMiller, and then it was all downhill for the Knights.

Princeton went up 10-5 on a layup by senior Parker Hill before going on a 10-0 run.

The Tigers closed the quarter up 23-15, shooting 56% from the field.

Princeton looked disjointed from the field in the second quarter and took a 33-25 lead into the locker room despite shooting only 1-for-12 from deep.

Rutgers cut the lead to 35-29 on a nifty underhanded move to the basket by grad student forward JoJo Lacey.

A Hill layup gave the visitors a 49-39 third-quarter lead.

The Tigers opened up their largest lead of 14 at 53-39 on two free throws from sophomore forward Fadima Tall.

Sophomore guard Ashley Chea led Princeton with a career-high 20 points on 9-for-21 shooting.

McMiller led Rutgers with a career-high 27 points on 12-for-25 shooting.

Princeton outrebounded Rutgers, 46-33.

Rutgers’ lead over its Route 1 rival in the all-time series is now 17-6.

Princeton is next in action at Temple on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

  1. Great recap, Richard. Too bad they don’t have a Coach of the Week award in the Ivy League, because if they did, Carla Berube would win it this week, hands down.
