Bez Mbeng is a 6-foot-4 senior guard from Potomac, Md. and the two-time reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. IHO recently caught up with him before a Yale practice:
Ivy Hoops Online: You have been known as a great defensive player and your offense has caught-up with your defensive play. How did that happen?
Bez Mbeng: Testament to the work my whole life. You want to keep getting better. Credit to my coaches. We live in the gym. Lots of dedication to our craft.
IHO: Compare Yale in February 2024 with Yale in February 2025.
BM: We are more connected now. More defined roles. [A] next-man-up mentality. More guys have bought into their roles, as opposed to an individual [mindset].
IHO: What is it like to play for James Jones?
BM: It’s amazing. [A] match made in heaven. I just can’t thank him enough for believing in me. Very respectful.
IHO: Take a look at the Ivy as of now.
BM: We’re dominating.
IHO: Your brother (Isaiah) is currently playing at William & Mary as a frosh. Was he interested in Yale?
BM: He wanted Yale, but the class was already filled. He does many things well. Pace and feel.
IHO: What is Ivy Madness like?
BM: It’s amazing. It’s a great opportunity.
IHO: What are your future basketball plans?
BM: NBA. I want to finish the year strong. I want to stay present.
