Cornell women’s basketball stumbles at Stanford

Sunday brought a 32-point loss at Stanford to Cornell women’s basketball, which hung around for 21 minutes before a 9-0 Cardinal run put the game well out of reach in an 82-50 result.

Along the way, Cornell earned some sporting praise en route to its fifth consecutive loss heading into Ivy League play.

Most notably, Emily Pape collected Ivy League Player of the Week honors for tallying six three-pointers and 24 points overall, including all 12 points that the Big Red scored in the game’s first quarter.

Statistically, not much else went right for Cornell in the loss besides Pape’s career-high three-point shooting performance.

Cornell came into the game with a scoring defense that held its first 11 opponents to an average of less than 60 points per game. However, Cornell had yet to score more than 62 points in a game.

Against Stanford, Cornell’s offensive woes continued while the defense allowed four Cardinal players to score 12 points or more. Stanford scored 56 points in the paint and 24 points off turnovers.

Cornell sophomore guards Kelsey Langston and Paige Engels had a particularly difficult outing with five turnovers apiece.

Cornell junior guard/forward Rachel Kaus barely touched the ball in the first quarter before she came to life in the second and finished the game with 10 points.

Freshman guard Trinity Jones made her debut for Cornell, recording her first points on a three-pointer.
