Penn stymies Temple, 66-59, to split Big 5 slate

Fran Dunphy’s teams always seemed to play great defense, whether at Penn or Temple.

Dunphy was honored with a standing ovation prior to the game, the first meeting between the two without either being coached by Dunphy in 31 seasons Saturday at the Palestra, and defense was fittingly the order of the day.

The Big 5 rivals held each other under a point per possession, but it was Penn that made enough shots for a 66-59 win.

The Dartmouth women entered Saturday’s rematch at Harvard looking to for its first series sweep since 2009, but a strong defensive effort and solid late-quarter three point shooting allowed the Crimson to keep its streak intact in front of a boisterous Alumnae Day crowd.

Yale men complete sweep of Brown

It was the Paul Atkinson and Matthue Cotton show at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, as Yale completed the sweep of Brown with a 73-62 win Friday night.
Both teams opened up cold from the field, and turnovers were the order of the day in the early going.
Yale coach James Jones brought Cotton in and the quick shooting sophomore guard from New Jersey hit four of his first five three-point shots to distance the league-leading Bulldogs from the Bears.
Yale led 33-25 at the half. Yale’s trademark defense forced high-scoring Brown into numerous off balance threes. The Bears focused largely on Jordan Bruner, who had torched Brown in New Haven.
The second half saw more of the same, as Atkinson scored inside on some nifty feeds and Cotton and dagger-shooting Azar Swain from the outside.
Reserve Wyatt Yess had another solid game for Yale with seven key rebounds.
Brown cut the deficit to six on two occasions late in the game, but an inside move by Atkinson and a three by Swain from the parking lot ended Brown’s bid.
Atkinson finished with 24 and Cotton with a career-high 20, with 15 coming in the first half. Bruner was held to two and had eight rebounds to lead Yale. Eric Monroe and Swain had 10 each.
“Really impressed with our team,” Jones said. “I knew Brown would be ready and give us their best. Our young men stepped up to the challenge.”
Brandon Anderson led Brown with 20 points and Tamenang Choh chipped in with 11 and a game-leading 12 rebounds.

Yale now sits at 14-4, 2-0 Ivy and Brown at 7-8, 0-2.
Both teams start Ivy back-to-backs next weekend, with Columbia at Yale and Cornell at Brown on Friday evening.

Thursday marked the 18-month anniversary of Penn’s Jerome Allen investigation announcement

A quick note to readers of Ivy Hoops Online that Thursday marked the 18-month anniversary of the Penn Athletics announcement that it would be hiring outside legal counsel to look into Jerome Allen receiving bribes from Florida businessman Philip Esformes to place Esformes’s son, Morris Esformes, onto the recruited athlete list for the entering Fall 2015 class.  The information was revealed as federal authorities were investigating the elder Esformes for healthcare fraud.

Temple takes Big 5 crown in late comeback over Penn women

The Penn women, who looked like Big 5 champions in the fall when they beat St. Joseph’s and La Salle (and Drexel, for that matter), missed a share of the city title when they went cold from outside, gave up 29 points in the fourth quarter and lost at Temple Thursday night, 76-72.
Temple and Villanova get to share Philadelphia bragging rights with three wins each in the series. Penn gets to wonder how it’s lost three games in a row, albeit to good teams, and how the defense on which it prides itself failed to protect a 15-point lead.

Harvard men hold on versus Dartmouth, 67-62, without Bryce Aiken

With Bryce Aiken watching from the sideline in a walking boot, Harvard withstood a late push from Dartmouth to take its Ivy opener, 67-62, at home.

The first half belonged to senior center Chris Lewis, who had 11 points and was perfect from the floor, while his freshman frontcourt partner Chris Ledlum led the Crimson (12-4, 1-0 Ivy) in the second half with 11 of his own. It was a game of highs and lows for Tommy Amaker’s squad, who withstood Dartmouth’s hot start and good shooting from behind the arc (41%) in the first half, but almost squandered a 12-point lead in the final minutes.

Columbia men cruise past Cornell, 75-61

Columbia built an early lead and avoided a late-game collapse, as the Lions opened the Ivy schedule with a convincing 75-61 victory over Cornell Saturday at Levien Gym.

The Big Red (3-11, 0-1 Ivy) started out strong, shooting 57% by the first media timeout, to take a quick 12-9 lead.  Unfortunately for the visitors, the Lions (6-11 overall, 1-0) limited Cornell to 14% shooting over the next 14-plus minutes.  The Columbia offense, meanwhile, was clicking on all cylinders, shooting 67% from two, 50% from three and 71% from the free throw line to take a commanding 48-29 halftime lead.
